Dental Implants: Five frequently asked questions answered by a dentist.

November 16, 2017

Dental implants are one of the most exciting advancements in the field of dentistry. Here are the 5 most commonly asked questions about Implants:

What is a dental implant?

A dental implant is a post made of titanium that can be used to replace missing teeth, or stabilize dentures. The patient's own bone is able to grow around the implant, and a crown (or dentures) can be placed on top of the implant.

Dental implants are a great option for:

  •  Single or multiple missing teeth

  • People who don't like their partial dentures, and want a fixed option (something they don't have to take out of their mouth)

  • People who have loose dentures (especially on the lower)

What does the procedure involve?

The procedure in our office typically takes 30-60 minutes under local anesthesia, so you will be numb and not feel any discomfort. The procedure involves making a small incision in the gum where the missing tooth is, making a space for the implant, and screwing the implant in. The anesthesia wears off after about two hours. We will see the patient for a quick follow up visit about 10 days after the procedure.

What is the recovery period?

We recommend most patients take over the counter pain medications like Tylenol and Advil before the anesthesia wears off. The area will be slightly tender after the procedure, but most patients report the soreness wears off after 1-2 days. You will be able to go to work the next day after the procedure.

How much do implants cost? Are they covered by my insurance?

Many people are unsure if they can afford a dental implant. The cost for a dental implant is typically split over two parts: the surgery to place the post (implant) and then the fee to put the crown on the implant. Because we have to wait 3-4 months to put the crown on while the bone grows into the implant, this allows for flexibility with payment.

Many dental insurances will cover a portion of the implant, and we also offer 0% interest payment plans over 6 or 12 months. Our front desk will help to maximize your insurance benefits, and find an affordable solution that works for you. Click here for more information about payment options.

Am I a candidate for a dental implant?

Prior to getting an implant, your dentist will review your medical history to make sure you are a good candidate. While research shows success rates can vary with certain medical conditions, most people, with some exceptions, are able to receive a dental implant. We also have to make sure there is enough space for the implant.

Our Taunton office has a state of the art Cone Beam (CBCT) which is a 3-D X-Ray machine that shows exactly how much available bone we have to place the implant, allowing us to plan the surgery on the computer prior to the actual procedure!
